The Role of 5G

The 5G network is the essential component in the proliferation of emerging disruptive technologies. 

A 5G network with its high-speed connectivity, high capacity, and low latency will clear the road for a massive and ubiquitous roll-out of these technologies.

Whereas the previous 3G and 4G networks primarily have supported the consumer market, 5G will to a large extent be dominated by commercial and industrial usage. IoT, in combination with AI, is expected to be the main drivers for the commercial and industrial usage of the 5G network.

Disruptive Technologies

Disruptive Technologies is a common term for emerging technologies that in a significant way will transform our way of life, businesses, and industries. Examples are Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, 5G, etc. 

The introduction of these technologies represents groundbreaking moments in time such as the invention of the internet, the personal computer. 

Disruptive Technologies bring a paradigm shift with new products and services requiring connectivity with massive amount of date, higher speed, higher capacity and lower latency 

The launch of a 5G network will represent a watershed event for their adoption.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Is a technology concerned with building smart machines and software capable of performing tasks requiring human intelligence. 

Examples of applications of AI are driverless cars, robots, natural language processing, smart assistants, smart homes, smart cities, healthcare, finance, etc.

5G Cellular Networks

 5G is the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks designed to connect everyone and everything together including machines and devices, providing high speed connectivity, high capacity and low latency data exchange. 

Previous generation networks connected people, 5G will connect machines. 

Internet of Things (IoT)

The internet of things is the physical network of objects – “things” – that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems without requiring human-to-computer interaction.

The concept of IoT is predicated upon an ubiquitous and fast network that can tie devices and services together.

Some 5G Challenges

Choice of architecture: Non-Stand-Alone (NSA), or Stand-Alone, or both. Consideration of Open RAN to avoid vendor lock-in.

The complexity of technology: Massive MIMO, millimetre waves, beam-forming intelligent antennas, full-duplex, virtualization, slicing, the immense amount of small cells, diversity of network connections.

A complex environment for planning, design, and engineering a highly dense network with a massive amount of devices, with significant challenges from propagation characteristics and dependencies like vegetation, building material, and weather.

Security will be a significant concern with edge software and billions of devices in the network.
